What is Matter Protocol?
Matter is an open-source, standard protocol for smart home lighting and Internet of Things (IOT) devices. It's designed to make your home's smart devices work together intelligently, regardless of the brand or ecosystem they belong to. It's developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), a group that includes major brands such as Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and hundreds of other companies.
Types:
Matter is a software language that devices use to communicate. Wi-Fi and Thread are wireless communication protocols that enable the signal to travel.
1) Matter Over Thread: A low-power, mesh networking protocol built specifically for IoT devices and smart lighting. It operates on the 802.15.4 wireless standard.
- Mesh network: The Thread device acts as a node that can relay data to other devices, extending range and improving reliability without needing everything to connect directly to your router.
- Low power consumption: Ideal for battery-operated devices (such as sensors and locks) or other small smart lighting devices (LED controllers and light dimmers).
- Needs a Border Router: The Matter Thread devices need a Border Router to connect to the internet and other devices. The Thread Border Router is often built into smart speakers, hubs, or displays such as the Apple HomePod Mini, Google Nest Hubs, or Amazon Echo.
2) Matter Over WiFi: A high-speed, high-power connection. It uses your existing WiFi network directly; no need for a hub or border router.
Fast Connection: The devices connect directly to your WiFi router or access point, rather than forming a mesh with other devices.
High Bandwidth: Better suited for devices that need to transmit more data, like smart cameras, video doorbells, etc.
High Power Consumption: Power consumption is higher than Thread, so Wi-Fi devices are typically plugged in. Best for smart plugs, displays, cameras, etc.
