What Are LED Light Drivers?
LED drivers are also known as power supplies, adapters, or transformers. They are essential components for low-voltage LED lights. A reliable lighting driver ensures efficient, optimal operation of the lighting system in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. LEDs require specific low-voltage DC12V or DC24V (direct current) power input. However, your homes and buildings have built-in high-voltage AC110V or AC220V (alternating current), so we need drivers to convert and control the electricity to meet the LEDs' requirements. They convert AC power into the low-voltage DC power required by strip lights, module lights, and other low-voltage LED lights. The LED power supply ensures stable current or voltage output, protecting LED lights from voltage fluctuations and ensuring consistent performance.
Why do we need the LED Strip Drivers?
Safe & Stable Power Delivery
LED power supply converts high-voltage AC into low-voltage DC, protecting LED strips from overvoltage and ensuring they operate safely and reliably.
Correct Voltage & Power Matching
Drivers are designed to match the LED strip’s required voltage (12V or 24V) and wattage, giving the strips the right amount of power without the risk of overload or dim, underpowered lighting.
Optional Dimming & Control Support
Many drivers are dimmable or compatible with external dimmers and controllers, allowing smooth brightness adjustment or complete RGB/RGBW color control when needed.
Reliable Performance & Longer LED Lifespan
A properly matched driver prevents flickering, uneven brightness, and electrical stress—helping LED strips run more smoothly and last much longer.
Indoor & Outdoor Versatility
For damp areas or outdoor installations, IP-rated or waterproof drivers provide extra protection against moisture, dust, and other environmental conditions.
The factors of choosing light drivers:
When choosing the appropriate LED light drivers, pay attention to the factors below:
1. In And Output Voltage
Please check the input and output voltage range before you order them. The manufacturer produces them with various input and output ranges. Mismatched products can cause your LED lights to burn out.
2. Maximum Load Wattage
For most of the LED adapters, the power efficiency is around 80% to 85%. Please choose a driver with a wattage rating at least 10-20% higher than the required wattage to ensure stable performance.
3. Current Output & Channels
Ensure the LED transformer matches the current of your constant-current LED lights. For color-changing ones, ensure the power supplies support multiple channels for your lights.
4. Dimming / Control
If you wish to dim or control lighting (on/off, dimming, color-changing) through the dimmable LED light drivers, please ensure they support dimming (PWM, TRIAC, 0/1-10V), remote control, app control, or voice control.
5. IP Rating
You can use the IP20/IP30-rated power supplies indoors. For humid/outdoor/damp areas, please choose the waterproof LED strip power supply.
FAQs:
1. When do we need a light driver?
If your LED light operates at low voltage, it must connect to an LED driver to convert AC to DC for stable performance.
2. What happens if I connect to the wrong one?
If the output voltage does not match, your LED lights may overheat, flicker, or be damaged. So it's very important to order the correct LED power supply. If you are unsure, don't hesitate to get in touch with us.
3. How to calculate the required wattage of your LED lights?
For the low-voltage light fixture, they will mark the wattage. For module or strip lights, the wattage will be listed per meter or per piece. Example: the wattage of one meter of LED strips is 10W, you have 5 meters. The wattage is 50 watts. You need an LED driver with a rated power of over 60W.
4. How can I choose the dimmable LED drivers?
We will specify in the tile or on the product page that they are dimmable. If you're not sure how to choose, please feel free to contact us.
5. For outdoor applications, should we need them to be waterproof?
Yes, for outdoor, damp, or humid environments, you need the waterproof ones to prevent moisture ingress.
